On February 17, a massive landslide on Leyte Island in the southern Philippines struck the village of Guinsaugon, which is located in the town of St. Bernard. According to Philippine officals, there are 141 confirmed fatalities, 971 people missing,
and 560 surviors. Search and Rescue operations have ended, and emphasis has shifted to providing relief for survivors.
The landslide occurred after the area endured 79 inches of rain over ten days. According to reporting by the
Center of Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, over 16,000 have been affected in 16 barangays ("village districts") of St. Bernard.
