As we reach the one year anniversary of the Great Sumatra Earthquake and Indian Ocean tsunami, it is time to reflect on those who lost their lives and loved ones during this unprecedented disaster. It is also vital that we honor the people and communities who are courageously moving forward in the face of incredible adversity.
At the Pacific Disaster Center--and at our partner organizations around the world--we are inspired to work tirelessly to mitigate the impacts of disasters as much as possible, and hope that a tragedy of this magnitude will never happen again. As reconstruction progresses, we are also stirred by the inner strength of those who are rebuilding their lives. Indeed, we have much to learn from them.
As the New Year begins, we at PDC are committed to building on our Indian Ocean tsunami response efforts and collaborating with organizations at local, national, and regional levels. The aftermath of this catastrophe inspires us to redouble our efforts, and to steadfastly pursue our vision of fostering disaster-resistant communities in the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean regions and beyond.
