KIHEI, HAWAII -- The Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) on Maui has announced a partnership with Sun Microsystems to develop and deploy Disaster Warning Systems for nations in the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. Currently, PDC and Sun are teaming on a project to support the development of an early disaster warning platform for Thailand's National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC).
"Our partnership with Sun is especially significant as we reflect on the one year anniversary of the tragic Indian Ocean tsunami," said PDC Chief Operating Officer Ray Shirkhodai. "Especially in light of last year's catastrophes, our Center remains committed to building national capabilities throughout the region, and to mitigating the impacts of future disasters as much as possible. To this end, Sun is a strong partner to help us carry out our plans towards fostering a safer world."
At the present time, PDC and Sun are providing technical assistance to Thailand's NDWC, including deployment of an "operations center technology platform," under a U.S. Trade and Development Agency-funded effort. For this and other projects, PDC will be leveraging its base architecture and integrated applications that were developed through previous collaborations with Sun.
"Sun is proud to be a member of this team--coupling Sun's enabling technologies with PDC's vast knowledge, and creating life saving solutions. These solutions assess risks to populated areas and deliver multi-hazard information products to emergency managers," said Clark Masters, Sun's Executive Vice President of Industries.
In 2005, immense disasters including the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina highlighted an extraordinary need for integrated Disaster Warning Systems.
Concludes Shirkhodai, "As we move forward, we truly believe that we can make progress towards ultimately saving lives and property. There is no doubt that we will inevitably confront major disasters again."
