KIHEI, HAWAII - The Pacific Disaster Center has been formally elected to membership in the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners. PDC was chosen along with five other new members to join the Federation's diverse spectrum of data centers, researchers, scientists, and others who are committed to sharing Earth sciences-related information across a variety of fields.
"We are very pleased to be joining the other members of the Federation who collaborate on Earth Sciences information to serve the environmental, social science, and disaster-related fields." said PDC Director Allen Clark. "This is an important synergy--our contribution of disaster-specific data and applications will support Federation members, and the vast resources of the Federation will contribute to our vision of fostering disaster-resistant communities."
The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners was initiated by NASA in 1997, and promotes increased accessibility, interoperability, and usability of Earth science data and products. PDC will contribute its vast repository of geospatial data and Earth Sciences applications, as well as its highly-developed "best practices" in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) supporting disaster management research and activities.
"Being elected to the Federation is a recognition of PDC's efforts to build an enterprise GIS that allows us to efficiently share earth resource and natural hazards data with researchers and managers around the globe. This capability has played a significant role in our work with other consortia as well, including the United Nations-affiliated International Charter "Space and Major Disasters," said PDC Senior Manager Chris Chiesa.
Joining PDC as new members of the Federation are the Environmental Research Systems Institute (ESRI), Pacific Northwest Laboratory/Battelle, and three projects from within the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
