On April 1, 1946 an Aleutian Island earthquake, magnitude-7.8, generated a tsunami that swept through the Hawaiian Islands and killed 159 residents. It is because of this tsunami event that Hawaii celebrates April as Tsunami Awareness Month. Each year in April we are reminded of the power and devastation that can be associated with a tsunami hazard and we ask that Hawaiian citizens be aware of this potential danger.
